My dog’s weed on the carpet! (Again!)

Jul 25, 2016

So, the dynamics have changed at the Ray household. On the 3rd April 2016, my gorgeous partner gave birth to our first child – Orla (don’t worry I’m not going to be discussing the whole giving birth thing).

Everything is great in the Ray household, but things have changed for one person in the family – Alfie, our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He’s decided to start decorating our house with his urine, nothing is safe; the nursery carpet, kitchen floor, Orla’s pram. They’ve all had a good sprinkling.

So, after a chat with my partner Jess and try to figure out ‘what the hell is going on’, we turned to everyone’s friend – Google. After consuming lots of online content and reading articles from various dog behaviour experts, what Alfie seem to be demonstrating was a territorial behaviour and we apparently discovered certain dogs have bigger trouble accepting a new baby into the home and especially those that were used to getting lots of attention and being the 'top dog'. That’s Alfie.

So, now realising what Alfie was doing was purely a jockeying for positioning within the family hierarchy and reminding us that he’s still here. Things are now gladly a lot better – all he needs is a big cuddle, plenty of walks and a belly full of food.

You could be facing the equivalent of the dog weeing on your carpet in your school or business, as much as we may not want to admit it, we all fall into a hierarchy within our family and work environments, so being able to see things from all points of view and being able to understand the bigger picture is an important skill to have. For any business or institute everybody has to move together in the same direction, so you have to be skilled in being able to get the best out of everybody.

There are some basic things that you need to get right. You need to make sure you communicate with your colleagues, everybody is clear on how they fit into the bigger picture and overall vision. Create regular opportunities to bond as a group. Get it right and things can be great, but get it wrong and you could end up with wee on the carpet!

Have a great summer.
