Physical education includes Sports which is usually taken out side due to space and safety for the children. Living in the UK the weather isn’t always the best, so when raining, Sports cannot be taken outside. Here we give you some ideas on what sort of session’s you could do with the children indoors, it will still be fun for the children and safer than going out in the rain with a slippery floor.

Sit down football – We all know that as soon as children get a football they kick it high or hard which obviously isn’t the best thing to do in a hall. So, get the children to do sit down football. Allow them to pass and dribble whilst sat down for the skill and then set up mini games for the children to play against each other, this will introduce an element of competition for them then as well.

Chair basketball – Playing with a foam ball, all children sit in a chair. One team holds their arms in a hoop shape and the other team has to try and shoot one at a time into it. If they miss the hoop they swap which aspect of the game they are doing.

Athletics – This can quite easily be done indoors. Set up the lines with skipping ropes, allow them to shoot and aim with bean bags, rely races and much more.

Fitness drills – Set up four different activities for the children. Could be star jumps, bleep tests with running, jumping on the spot and jogging on the spot. Allow the children to spend 2-3 minutes on each activity.

Indoor golf – Allow the children to work their way around different obstacles set up with benches, cones, hula hoops, etc. This can easily be done with hockey sticks if plastic golf clubs aren’t available.

Badminton – this can be played so long as the height of the school hall is high enough.

Handball – making sure the ball is soft and keeping goals small, getting the children just to learn the skills and rules of handball ready to take it outside and play matches.

Throwing and catching – This can still be done inside with either sponge balls or just bean bags. Setting the aim up with hula hoops or cone in a shape. Allowing the children to work in pairs or groups to see how many times they can pass without dropping.

Tag games – In a smaller environment can be a nightmare but change the rules so the children have to move around the room by hop scotch or hopping or jumping, that way they can’t move as fast as running.

Dodgeball – Changing the rules so it’s safer to do in side is the best option. Firstly, soft balls as always, get the children to only roll across the ground and they can only get others out by touching below the knee.

Alongside all the physically moving above, you can make sure children have taken everything in they have been taught to them with quizzes, get the children to evaluate themselves, lesson on healthy foods and eating. As long as it is only a one-off classroom-based PE session you are still learning about fitness and wellbeing.
