Why not get your children involved in the World Cup this year by doing some lessons on it. Below are some resource for you to use with the children, you may need to change depending on the year group and some sessions maybe a little to hard.

Lesson on Russia

  • Russia is the worlds largest country, it covers a seventh of the worlds land. It extends so far that Vladivostok is seven hour ahead of Moscow.

  • Russia has the most forests of any country. They are called Taiga.

  • In northern Siberia the tundra is a cold treeless area.

  • Russia is rich in natural source such as timber, natural gas and oil.

  • Over 18,000 wild bears live in the wild Kamchatka region. The love salmon.

  • There are lots of famous creative Russians such as Chekov Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and Tchaikovsky who wrote the nutcracker suite.

  • Russia is hosting the world cup 2018.

  • Russia shares borders with lots of other countries like China, Ukraine, North Korea and Norway.

  • There are 9 time zones in Russia.

  • The capital is Moscow.

  • Russia has 40 national parks and 100 wildlife reserves.

  • Moscow hosted the 1980 summer Olympics.

You could read these out to the children and get them to make notes maybe turn into a quiz afterwards to see what they have remembered. Maybe pictures would be beneficial for younger children.

Play Football

You could hold your very own World Cup for the children allow them to play football in their PE sessions and then get to a game where they are all playing 5 a side and the winners of each game play each other. You could get the year 6’s to help referee the younger children.

Set up skills area’s for the children to learn new tricks with the football.

World cup fact time

  • Russia will host the world cup for the first time this year.

  • This will be Russia’s 11th appearance in the world cup, the highest they have finished is 4th and that was in 1966.

  • 3.2 billion people watch the last World cup, that over half of the worlds population.

  • The World cup has been played 20 times! With Brazil winning it 5 times.

  • The first ever World cup was in 1930.

  • He World cup was stolen in 1966 and small dog called Pickle found it in a park!

  • England have won the World Cup once.

  • The winning team of the World cup takes home $35 Million

  • Brazil have had the most red cards throughout the competition at 11 handed out.

  • 12 Stadiums will be used in the World cup this year and they will be across 11 Cities in Russia.
